The switch-off

The BT switch-off is 31 January 2027. Here is what your business needs to do.

By David White, Director, Padel Services · Updated October 2026

The short answer

Old copper phone lines (PSTN and ISDN) are being switched off across the UK, with 31 January 2027 as the final date. Every business still on them needs to move calls, and anything else on those lines, to digital before then. Start with a list of every line you pay for and what is plugged into it.

What is being switched off

The analogue phone network and ISDN lines that businesses have used for decades. New ones stopped being sold in September 2023. Calls move onto internet-based lines, either a cloud phone system or SIP lines into the system you have.

It is not only your phones

Alarms, lift lines, door entry, card machines, franking machines and fax lines often run on the same copper. Each one needs checking, because some need a new line or a digital adapter, and some need their maintainer to change them.

How we move you

We list every line and what is on it, check what is available at your address, and build your new system in our workshop first. Your old lines stay live until your numbers move, so there is no day without calls.

The questions businesses ask.

When is the BT switch-off, and could it be delayed again?

The final date is 31 January 2027. Openreach has said there will be no extension, so plan on that date.

What stops working: phones only, or alarms and card machines too?

Anything that runs over an old copper line can be affected, including alarms, lift lines, door entry and some card machines. We check every line on your bills and what is connected to it.

Will we keep our business phone numbers?

Yes. Your numbers move to the new service with you.

Do our phones work in a power cut after the switch?

Digital lines need power. If a line matters in an emergency, ask for a battery backup or a mobile backup on that line, and we will plan it in.

How do we find out which of our lines are still on copper?

Send us your bills. We go through every line, tell you what it is and what needs to change.

Why we are different

What we don’t do.

This is not about knocking anyone else. It is the promises we keep, written the other way round, so you can hold us to them.

  • We don’t use day-rate subcontractors. Our own engineers install your system, and they answer for it afterwards.
  • We don’t employ commission-driven salespeople with targets. Our team is rewarded for how long customers stay with us, so the right answer matters more than the sale.

  • We don’t take your business offline to switch. It is built before we arrive, and your old system stays live until your numbers move. No downtime, no disruption.
  • We don’t hide behind tickets and emails.Ring us and you speak to a person who can see your whole account.
  • We don’t pass your query between departments for days. One team owns it until it is fixed.
  • We don’t sell what suits us instead of you.If what you have is right, we will tell you to keep it.
